Website & App Design for a North Devon Based Tech Startup

Meet Flourish

At Barr Media, we've always been inspired by brands that want to 'do good', companies that want to give back and improve the world in the areas that matter most. So when we were approached by Flourish, a new tech startup out of Devon, we were excited to discuss their ideas.

Flourish is a messaging app like any other, you can send messages (obviously), photos, videos, GIFs, documents and more to your friends or groups. The one thing that sets it apart from competitors though, is that it instead of keeping profits, Flourish gives away it's income to tree planting initiatives the world over.

Read about the intricacies of the project below:

Barr Media was brought on board as technology and marketing specialists, covering the design, development and marketing of Flourish's new website and app, building from the ground up, to launch.

Launch was decided to be taken in several steps to ensure that the technology would scale and user feedback as good as it could be.

  1. Brand, website and app design & development.
  2. Launch website.
  3. Release initial marketing campaigns to register usernames.
  4. Launch app.
  5. Continue marketing campaigns to grow the userbase further.

Step One and Two: Design, Development & Launch

This step is by far the largest and can be split into several sub-steps. However, to summarise for this blog, stage one of the process is to, first of all, develop a brand for Flourish and then apply that brand to a designed website and app. Once all these asset designs were completed and signed off, we then built the website and app.

Step Three: Initial Marketing

After the launch of the website and all the branding done, it was time to begin the initial marketing of the platform. With the app yet to be released, the goals of the campaigns for Flourish would be to generate brand awareness and begin growing a presence, drive traffic to the website and finally, get visitors to reserve a username and therefore, gather their contact details for when the app launched.

The choice behind doing marketing and generating username reservations instead of just releasing the app was for a few reasons. One, it would generate brand awareness and 'hype' as it were for the app when it was released, meaning Flourish would hit the ground running with users. Next, by marketing the platform and gathering users ready for release would also allow Flourish to scale intelligently and budget for further marketing and resources by being able to see initial registered interest.

At this time, we're on Step 3 about to begin marketing via:

  • SEO
  • Google Ads
  • Pinterest
  • Instagram
  • Facebook

We'll update this blog with the results but thus far, we have registered over 1,000 users for the platform and released the website last week.

Beyond Step Three: App Launch & Further Marketing

There isn't currently a time limit on the launch campaigns currently running, however, once the KPIs are hit for that, Barr Media will role out the messaging app to iOS, Google Play as well as offering a web app so Flourish can be used on desktop devices too.

We'll update this blog with further information later as we progress with the launch and change the marketing.

Conclusions

We're really excited to have been given the opportunity to work with such an amazing brand here at Barr Media. Companies with an eco-agenda wanting to improve the world are something we always want to get behind and help. Flourish is a company we all believe in and want to succeed and hopefully, with the cause they are supporting, is a shared belief.

As Barr Media continues to work with Flourish, we'll update this case study with more information so you can see how the startup is growing.
